DESCRIPTION

Family Days are a great opportunity for children and adults to have fun and learn in a museum. The weekend event features hands-on activities, lectures and exciting tours of current exhibitions.

The program is designed for children aged five and older and their parents.

HOW TO TAKE PART

Free admission with online registration.

Accessible for visitors with disabilities.
We also invite deaf and hard of hearing children to attend the workshop, where there will be teachers trained in Russian Sign Language.

Game excursion. 5+

During our game excursion, Garage’s youngest visitors will travel into the world of art and visit cubists in their homes, where various tricks and creative puzzles are waiting for them.

Family auditorium. How art world works. 8+

How does the world of art work? Who executes artworks, and who decides what should be exhibited publicly, and what remains unrepresented? Who are curators and critics, and what do they do? Family Auditorium educators will help the participants find answers to these complex questions and learn a bit more about the fates of various artists and artworks in the vast world of museums and the art market.

Thematic guided tour around the exhibition. Andy Warhol’s Factory. 8+.

This special guided tour takes participants and their tutors back to the times of Andy Warhol’s legendary Factory. The little Factory guests will learn about pop art as a movement in the history of contemporary art, and get the chance to nose around, overhearing what soup cans talk about with each other, as well as engage in creative workshops.

In Garage Studio, participants will get the chance to experience optical illusions and apply the effect of a moving object or space and depth to the flat surface of a sheet of paper. The tutors will explain the principles of creating three-dimensional images and optical tricks. Workshop members will try their own skills in drawing and sculpture, and will execute mini installations.

During the game excursion around the exhibition The Other Trans-Atlantic, Garage’s youngest visitors will be introduced with the categories of “dynamic” and “static”. Exercises and creative workshops designed especially for this class will allow visitors to reveal movement inherent in stationary objects and to understand how it can be possible.

Family auditorium. Optical illusions: movement and space. 8+

Throughout history, artists have been searching for the ways to represent the illusion of volume, space, depth, and movement on the flat surface of a painting. Family Auditorium teachers will explain the nature and main mechanisms of optical illusions: participants will learn how a human eye actually works when it receives visual information, and why static objects may appear moving and changing when we look at them.

Thematic guided tour around the exhibition. Moving the motionless: interaction between the space and the viewer. 8+

Visitors of this guided tour around the exhibition The Other Trans-Atlantic will get introduced to the artworks which create a moving effect while remaining motionless and will discuss the very idea of “movement” and the diverse approaches to understanding it. Participants will also learn how movement can be a consequence of space, light, objects, and the viewer interacting with others.

A Game excursion around the exhibition The Other Trans-Atlantic. Kinetic and Op Art in Eastern Europe and Latin America 1950–1970s. 5+

Members of this guided tour will travel back in time and learn about some of groundbreaking scientific discoveries and inventions of the twentieth century that inspired kinetic and op artists and informed their practice. They will also have the chance to contemplate cities of the future and take part in creative workshops.

The lecture will provide an understanding of how scientific discoveries and the development of new technologies, including space exploration, impacted the entire world in the 1960s and led way to a new vision of the future, and the kinetic art movement in particular.

Studio. City of the Future. 5+

For each participant a visit to the Studio will offer them the opportunity to choose from scientific discoveries and technological breakthroughs—and decide which of them will influence our future urban life. For the duration of the workshop its members will become engineers, designers and architects: with the aid of Museum teachers they will design their own projects of houses or other urban constructions and build their models using various materials.

School of Color Magic for the youngest. 3+

Garage’s youngest visitors are invited to join our School of Color Magic and study the physical nature and origins of colors. Together with their parents and Museum tutors, the children will explore the color palette and the laws of getting different grades. They will learn the names of paint pigments and how to mix them, will compose mosaics using color filters, and conduct experiments with soap bubbles and flashlights.

Family Auditorium. Carlos Cruz-Diez: The History of Color. 8+

Family Auditorium visitors will learn about the practice of Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez who devoted a large part of his work to kinetic art based on the study of color and its perception by the human eye.

A short documentary films about the artist featuring his interviews and animation will be screened during the lecture.

Guided tour for school students. Magicians of Color: From Impressionists to Op Art. 10+

This exhibition tour will explain how color was used by the impressionists and op artists: while Claude Monet was aiming to capture elusive natural colors and lights within a canvas, a century later Carlos Cruz-Diez used light and color for creating pieces that can change in space and time.

 For several hours, Garage’s Studio for kids will transform into a real laboratory where children and adults will study the amazing phenomena of the world of color and be immersed in creative experiments. Everyone will have the opportunity to learn how to use the color circle, what is meant by the terms “chromatic intervention” and “moire effect”, explain for themselves tricks with color lightning, and create a postcard or a toy with the effect of optical illusion.

Family lecture day and studio. Vyacheslav Koleichuk: artist and inventor. 8+

Museum educators will introduce youngsters and adults with the theory and practice of Vyacheslav Koleichuk—a legendary Soviet and Russian artist, designer and inventor, creator of the incredible “tin” reality featured in the cult sci-fi movie Kin-Dza-Dza.

Installed on the square in front of the Museum, participants will have the chance to witness Atom—a reconstruction of the artist’s monumental kinetic work first executed in 1968. The teachers will explain how these constructions remain stable, what the term “self-stressed structure” means, will introduce the listeners to the basics of form-making and the technical implications of stereography. During the practical part, participants will try to design original models using self-stressed structures as their analogue.
