DESCRIPTION

How can an artist share their story? What is creative biography and why is it important for the promotion of your own artistic brand? In the course of the discussion Russian artists Dmitry Gutov and Vladimir Dubossarsky and foreign curators Patrick Gosatti, Yann Chateigné, and Elise Lammer will share their personal experiences and reveal how they responded to these questions.

An artist has to face considerable challenges on the way from an initial idea to the final work of art. Supporting an artist on state and private, international and regional, commercial and non-profit levels is often interlocked with a lot of obstacles due to their social and aesthetic status. An artist is confronted with a complex and multi-layered structure in which artists and viewers, curators and gallery owners, museum keepers and art critics constantly interact. An artist recognition system on the friend-or-foe basis is developed through the interaction of an artist and art community, where it is not only talent that matters, but their entrepreneurial skills as well.

Based on his experiences of the publishing project Collection Cahiers d’Artistes launched by the Swiss Arts Council, Pro Helvetia, Patrick Gosatti will develop some thoughts on artistic promotion in the contemporary art system. Russian artists Dmitry Gutov and Vladimir Dubossarsky will talk about challenges they faced in the course of their career primarily in the framework of Russian art market. Discussion moderator Sasha Obukhova will compare experiences of Russian and foreign colleagues by means of correlation between common and different in artistic self-representation through a personal story.

The discussion has been jointly organized by Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and Pro Helvetia and dedicated to the gift of Collection Cahiers d’Artistes from Swiss Art Council Pro Helvetia to Garage Archive and Library.
