Discussion: How Heroes Left and We Stayed. My word! Actionism and Its Voices

DESCRIPTION

Katrin Nenasheva’s third discussion within the cycle How Heroes Left and We stayed. Actionism 2020 will evolve around art activists’ interaction with people not related to art.

Actionist and art activist practices of the 2010s are intended to unite with various social groups as much as at working with them. Using participatory tactics, contemporary art activists often assume the voice of the isolated citizens, aiming to create a space for their direct articulation. In conversation with artists and enactors of their projects, Katrin Nenasheva will discuss whether current actionists and art activists are proficient enough in terms of engaging former prisoners, people with experience of violence, and people with physical or learning disabilities in art initiatives.

ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS

Katrin Nenasheva (b. 1994, Krasnodar) is an actionist artist, psychoactivist, and director. Representing the third wave of actionism, her works implement an interdisciplinary approach to explore the life of closed communities, one of Nenasheva’s key methods being the engagement of a wide variety of people not related to art, regardless of their age and education, in actions and art projects. She is the founder of Urban Self-Expression Headquarters—the first creative platform aimed at generating art activist practices. The Headquarters will be represented at the 2nd Garage Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art due to open in September 2020.
