Sitting on Suitcases. Dance and Context: A Meeting with Albina Vakhitova

Date

Schedule

19:30–21:00

Place

West Gallery

DESCRIPTION

Albina Vakhitova began her independent artistic practice after the pandemic, when she launched the dance company SAD.

The main motive for founding the company was the search for a means of collective existence based on regular joint practice that includes the study of movement techniques, the formation of intentions in action, and the integration of the subjective experience of participants in performative works. In the three years of its existence, SAD has created 20 works of various formats and scales. «The success of many of them, ” says the artist, «is a collective achievement. A result of pleasant, difficult, strong, and complex relationships that are reflected in everything I do. After the collective of co-thinkers appeared, I acquired an understanding of the values of my work and that of others, and a feeling of responsibility.» Since February 2022, Albina has ceased initiating creative projects and many of the people who were part of SAD have moved to other countries. Today she practises mainly as an invited artist. This meeting with viewers is an opportunity to express the questions that worry the artist and seek answers to them together by watching video documentation of productions by SAD and Albina. «Having got used to changing reality and sitting on suitcases, I cannot stop thinking about the role played by the context in which my work exists and whether it is possible to create new works without a permanent collective. Where do I get the courage and belief in what I continue to do and who is it addressed to?»
