Make Me Up
Siri wakes up to find herself trapped inside a candy-coloured dreamhouse that is in fact a brutalist prison run by an authoritarian presenter (played by the director Rachel Maclean herself), who speaks with the voice of BBC’s Civilisation presenter Kenneth Clark. Siri and her fellow inmates are forced to go head-to-head in a series of demeaning tasks. Soon, they start to break the rules.
Make Me Up explores the contradictory pressures experienced by women in a world where television and social networks have become tools for constructing identities and at the same time push them to match the strict beauty standard. Multimedia artist Rachel Maclean has created a world that is both seductive and dangerous; a place where surveillance, violence, and submission are a normalized part of daily life.
