Block 3. Block 3. What can we (un)learn from each other

In 2015, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art launched an Inclusive Programs department. Informed by our own experience and the experience of our colleagues from other institutions, we invite you to join a discussion that reflects on the specificity of inclusive programs in Russia. For a long time, we at Garage haven’t been accurate enough in terms of the historical context, which is why we suggest dedicating the third weekend of the conference to discussing educational programs for people with disabilities in the past and today. What is the impact of Soviet educational programs and projects on modern ones? What do specialists of various profiles understand by inclusion? And most importantly, what new can this dialogue bring to the development of inclusion?

All participants involved in this conversation in one way or another relate to what is labeled “alternative pedagogics”—something oppositional, experimental, and non-institutionalized.

Together we will try to track down how the currently existing communities passed on the experience of certain methodologies implemented in Soviet pedagogical projects. While the target audience for these techniques is changing, some of them remain relevant today.

Garage invites those working with contemporary inclusive and pedagogical practices to participate in the event, which is aimed at discussing the efficiency of the developments presented and the possibility of instrumentalizing the experience of the Soviet past today, on the one hand, and at integrating existing traditions into the historical context by exposing the continuity of pedagogical trajectories and community-building methods, on the other.

The rapid development of inclusive programs in culture is a great excuse for discussing the specifics of the Russian context, wherein inclusion specialists work. It is proposed to discuss the influence of the Soviet pedagogics’ legacies on present-day interaction practices in education and culture designed for people with disabilities. How do educational and cultural institutions operate today? What are the differences between and similarities in the practices of experts representing different profiles? What can schools and boarding schools teach museum workers—and what can they learn from them?
