“How a Scent Turns into Words and Vice Versa.” Lecture by Daria Dolina

Which stages of recognition and comprehension must a scent go through before we can say with certainty that we have smelt a lemon or an orange, a rose or a lily? Why do scents trigger memories and what is the Proust effect? How do perfumes work? Why can we start experiencing more scents just by speaking about our olfactory experiences? The process of olfactory recognition was not fully understood by scientists until recently. Only in the 1990s did Richard Axel and Linda B. Buck describe the functioning of olfactory receptors. Critic Daria Dolina will explain the science behind scents and speak about olfaction in general.
