The development of Anastasia Rybakova’s career, which began five years ago in Krasnoyarsk, is an example of a positive scenario for a young artist who did not give up despite being told «you need to get to our level» and who began diligently studying the possibilities of the region step by step.
During the meeting at Garage, Anastasia will talk about the key artistic events and places of Krasnoyarsk and Siberia and explain how an architectural education frees an artist from the curator’s diktat. She will also show her most recent projects, which she created at Garage Studios where she is a resident, including from an exhibition at Dai Pyat Gallery (Voronezh) that opened in early November.
Anastasia works mainly with large-format works on paper, which she creates using colored pencils and felt-tip pens, depicting imaginary creatures or living plants or snowflakes. Through such unusual subjects, often put together through free association, Anastasia studies the possibilities of human imagination and empathy. Rybakova’s method is built on a combination of the aesthetics of topical zines and the openness of children’s book illustration. The resulting images are somewhere between the fairy tale and the surreal, offering the viewer a number of ways of reading and the artist various means of development.
