Since 2015, Garage has been supporting Moscow Art Magazine (Khudoshestvenny Zhurnal)—a leading publication in Russian on contemporary art theory. The Museum has taken over the printing of the journal and maintains its website where the archive of the magazine’s issues and editions are published.
In April 2019, this mutual endeavor will be expanded. As part of a joint public program, Garage will present four new Moscow Art Magazine issues. The presentations will feature notable researchers and authors as guest speakers, each of them delivering a lecture or workshop, or engaging in a collective discussion. This new phase of partnership enables the full implementation of the interdisciplinary focus of the periodical, where contemporary art practitioners and theorists from across the world have been meeting each other over the past twenty-five years.
Founded in 1993, Moscow Art Magazine became the first post-Soviet periodical dedicated to contemporary art and culture, whose editorial board invites artists, critics, art historians, theorists, philosophers, and sociologists to engage in the discussion and preparation of each issue. In 2017, Garage released the book Critical Mass: Moscow Art Magazine 1993–2017—an anthology of texts written by Russian contributors to the magazine. The publication introduces international experts in the field of contemporary art to an almost thirty-year long history of post-Soviet thought around contemporary art and forms the basis for Garage and the journal’s joint intellectual practice and research.
