A Show of Human Achievements

We usually go to a museum to see an exhibition: old masters or contemporary artists, artifacts or whatnot. Is it possible to organize a show outside of museum walls?

The history of world expos, or fairs, dates back to the nineteenth century. World fairs take place in special pavilions rather than museums proper and display scientific and technological advancements. They bring together many countries, all of them competing with the each other. It is largely due to world fairs that progress gains momentum so rapidly.

But what is it that that you feel proud of? Which achievements of human thought can be found in your home? Try to make your own tiny, yet so significant, show of human achievements!

First, make a list of the most interesting and crucial things you have at home (those who cannot write can draw pictures). Perhaps, you’ve got a typewriter? Or an old barometer? Floor scales? An electric kettle? What about some other inventions? After selecting the items for the exhibition, draw its plan. To do so, make a room-to-room plan of your apartment or house and mark with a cross the selected objects.

Don’t forget to write texts featuring brief descriptions of objects to accompany the exhibited pieces. These texts can be written on colored stickers.

You can also prepare an oral description of each piece on show and thus organize a tour of your exhibition.

When everything is ready, invite your housemates to a show of human achievements.

Hooray! Now your home has also contributed to the history of world expos! Share your exhibits via social media using the hashtag #adriftaroundtheflat.
