Voronezh artist Jan Posadsky has long been an adherent of public art.
In answer to the question «What is public art?» Jan quotes the definition proposed by his colleagues at a discussion in Nizhny Novgorod in 2009: «Public art is a form of existence of contemporary art outside the artistic infrastructure, in the public space, designed to communicate with the viewer, including people who may not know about public art, and which problematizes various questions related to both contemporary art and the space where it is presented.» At this meeting, street art will be considered based on Jan’s own experience of festivals in Russia (as an artist/curator/organizer) and on that of other Russian and international artists. There will be a particular focus on the role of public art in resolving social and town-planning issues: reinforcing public expression, illuminating issues around the preservation of cultural heritage, and sensitizing citizens to the urban context.
