Book Launch with Claire Bishop on Radical Museology or, What's ‘Contemporary' in Museums of Contemporary Art?
Friday 21st March 2014, 20:00
Claire Bishop will present her new book in conversation with Anastasia Mityushina, Head of Garage Education. The book is launched within the program of Garage 2nd International Conference The Reflexive Museum: Responsive Spaces for Publics, Ideas, and Art.
The future of the public museum, able to represent the interests of the ninety-nine percent rather than to consolidate private privilege, has never seemed bleaker. Or has it?
In the face of austerity and cuts to public funding, a handful of museums of contemporary art have devised compelling alternatives to the mantra of bigger is better and richer. Radical Museology presents the collection displays of the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Museo Nacional de Reina Sofia in Madrid and MSUM in Ljubljana as outliners of a new understanding of the contemporary art.
Radical Museology is a vivid manifesto for the contemporary as a method rather than a periodization, and for the importance of a politicized representation of history in museums of contemporary art.
Claire Bishop is a Professor in the PhD Program in Art History at CUNY Graduate Center, New York.
Admission is free.
The book launch will be in Russian and English with simultaneous translation. ID is required for hire of the equipment.
