Presentation of Andrew Solomon's book, The Irony Tower: Soviet Artists in a Time of Glasnost
This book by American culture and psychology writer Andrew Solomon offers an insight into the avant-garde Soviet art of the late 1980s. Solomon was present at the Sotheby's auction, held in Moscow in 1988, which introduced works by nonconformist Soviet artists to the West. Solomon visited the very heart of the unofficial Soviet art - the famous squat in Furmanny Lane - where he met major underground artists. Later, he repeatedly revisited the Soviet Union, supported the Russian artists holding exhibitions in the West, and published his book on the Glasnost-era underground artistic community. Konstantin Zvezdochetov, one of the major characters depicted in the book, provided commentaries and the afterword to the first Russian edition.
