The bilingual catalogue for Mark Rothko: Into an Unknown World. 1949–1969, presented by Garage in 2010, documents the first solo exhibition of Mark Rothko in Moscow.

Reproducing materials from the exhibition of the same name, Mark Rothko: Into an Unknown World offers an introduction to the work of one of the world’s most celebrated artists of the 20th century, and contains two essays by brilliant Russian and U.S. scholars. In one of them, art historian and corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts Professor Andrei Tolstoy discusses Rothko’s artistic career and the development of his style in conjunction with his biography. In the second one, art critic Irving Sandler examines Rothko’s major role in the transformation of abstract expressionism.

The catalogue section of the book contains photos of the 30 pieces that were presented in the exhibition. Spanning the period from late 1949 to the 1970s, these are the works made by the key artist of New York abstractionism at his peak.

With many photos of the artist, the catalogue also features a detailed timeline of his life. The publication will be of interest to art professionals as well as to the general reader.
