Workshops based on Japanese traditional painting and crafts for deaf and hard of hearing visitors

DESCRIPTION

Artist Svetlana Bobkova is one of the students on Garage’s training course for deaf museum guides. In these workshops, she will offer an introduction to Japanese art in Russian Sign Language and teach participants to make ornaments inspired by Japan’s traditions.

The inclusive program for Takashi Murakami’s exhibition Under the Radiation Falls includes a series of workshops devoted to Japanese painting and crafts for deaf and hard of hearing visitors. Participants will learn to make landscape and layered cards, flower compositions, and traditional Japanese paper lamps.

ABOUT THE TEACHER

Svetlana Bobkova is an artist whose media of choice are painting and drawing. She is a member of the Creative Union of Russian Artists and a supplementary education teacher. She is currently completing Garage’s training course for deaf museum guides.

Suiboku-ga workshop. Decorating postcards with Japanese ink paintings

This workshop is devoted to the Japanese tradition of landscape cards. Nature holds a special place in the Japanese cultural code as it is believed to be a manifestation of divine will.

Workshop. Making flower compositions based on the Japanese painterly tradition

In this workshop, participants will create compositions of flowers and leaves inspired by the Japanese hanami tradition. Hanami—the custom of enjoying the beauty of flowers—dates back centuries but is still popular in contemporary Japan. A careful study of flower petals will allow participants to see beauty in tiniest details and later revisit it in their works.

Andon Workshop. Making Japanese paper lanterns

In this workshop, participants make andons—Japanese paper lamps. Andon means ‘walking light’, and indeed traditional andon lanterns consisting of bamboo (or, seldom, metal) frame and rice paper to protect and soften the light were very light and portable. Andons’ popularity peaked in the seventeenth century, during the Edo period.

Workshop. Making layered postcards based on Japanese landscape paintings

This workshop is devoted to making layered cards of colored paper. In Japan, handmade cards are a very popular gift. Participants will focus on the kirigami technique (from kiri meaning ‘to cut’ and gami meaning ‘paper’).
