Opening the new season of the partner program, Garage has prepared a finissage of the exhibition Rasheed Araeen. A Retrospective and Pavel Pepperstein’s personal show The Human as a Frame for the Landscape.
On this day, visitors to Garage get free entry to exhibition projects, will have the chance to engage in curator’s tours of the 4th International GARAGE ART BOOK FAIR and Vkus Bumagi Print Market, and see the premiere enactment of Disco Sailing, a performance based on a Rasheed Araeen script that will start at 16:00 on Pionersky Pond in Gorky Park.
Pavel Pepperstein’s survey The Human as a Frame for the Landscape is an attempt of a full-scale “inspection” of some of the key and most influential myths created by the artist at various times since the 1970s. Pepperstein is one the most prolific mythmakers in contemporary Russian art, an inventor of systems, universes, languages, cities, and political projects. Specially for this show, he has produced around twenty new artworks, including drawings, videos, and installations.
The exhibition Rasheed Araeen. A Retrospective acquaints visitors with the British artist and political activist’s practice spanning six decades. The first Russian exposition of works by the influential Minimalist and fighter for the rights of third-world artists embraces all the main periods of Araeen’s oeuvre: from the early studies created in Pakistan to the late minimalist pieces. Commissioned by Garage, Rasheed Araeen has created the sculpture Homage to Tatlin for the Atrium space, inspired by the Soviet constructivist.
Conceived in 1968, Disco Sailing remains Rasheed Araeen’s most famous action. During the original performance, the artist floated orange discs in water reservoirs of London and Karachi, thus creating a spontaneously evolving spatial sculpture, unbounded by the limitations of an exhibition room. The edition staged on Pionersky Pond in Gorky Park will see nine performers wearing costumes in the signature colors of Araeen’s paintings and sculptures balance on minimalist-looking floating circles, executed in accordance with the artist’s drawings.
