Family Auditorium: Living in the Age of Anthropocene. 8+

Over the history of humankind, people have changed nature more than any other species, and continue to transform the planet every day. But how should we evaluate this impact? Based on the scientific method of measuring the Ecological Footprint and biocapacity, the speakers will demonstrate what every human being leaves after themselves, how many planets we need to satisfy our needs, how cultural specificity and everyday habits impact the social and biological evolution of humans, as well as everyone and everything else on Earth. The talk will also touch upon a new anticipated geological age—the Age of Anthropocene, where people become the main force altering the appearance of the planet. The audience will learn how to measure their personal Ecological Footprint and if it is possible to reduce one’s impact on the planet without giving up on comfort.

Family Auditorium: Urban Jungles: Is There a Place for Wild Nature in Artificial Landscapes? 8+

Cities are centers of our economic, scientific, educational, and cultural life. According to UN statistics, by the mid-twenty-first century over two thirds of the Earth’s population will be living in cities. But they are not only our homes—cities also shape an artificial eco system that provides us with the necessary resources and which we share with plants and animals. Wild nature is an integral part of this system. Clean water, air quality, and even temperature regimes depend directly on the state of urban eco systems. During this class, the young audience will learn about the formation of wild animal populations in cities, why beehives are installed on the roofs of buildings, who planted a meadow of different grasses in the city center, and how to protect birds from skyscrapers (and vice versa).
