DESCRIPTION

This discussion between artists and scientists will summarize the midline results of the Garage x Nikonole project, which is the work that the artist Helena Nikonole began for the IAM exhibition.

For the duration of IAM Episode I, the media artist Helena Nikonole has been working on an artificial neural network training for sound analysis and generation. This project is a kind of artistic research, a half-way result of which are some audio recordings, compositions created by the artificial neural network from different sounds of bird song. Participants of the discussion are artists and scientists who will debate of the recordings from their professional viewpoint and discuss the application of artificial intelligence methods in contemporary art and science.

The discussion will be led by Olga Remnieva.

ABOUT THE PARTISIPANTS

Helena Nikonole is a media artist whose field of interests embraces hybrid art, the new aesthetics, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence. Participant of multiple exhibitions, including: Open Codes (ZKM, Germany); Politics and Poetics of Surtface (Veinti4/Siete Galería (Costa Rica); The Wrong biennial; Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art; Earth Lab (collaboration between Polytechnic Museum and Ars Electronica festival); Podgotovlennye Sredy festival, and others. Nikonole has taught and delivered seminars at many institutions, including the National Center for Contemporary Art, the RAS Institute of Philosophy, Office of educational programs in the field of arts and culture at the Department of Culture of Moscow, Rodchenko Art School, etc.


Veronica Samotskaya is a scientist-biologist, science popularizer, journalist. Editor of the popular scientific portal Elements, lecturer of the biological faculty of the Moscow State University. A founder of the educational project Birdwatching Moscow in Moscow and the Moscow Region. Scientific interests - acoustic communication of animals, behavior, ecology, nesting biology of birds, faunistics.


Konstantin Yakovlev, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Leading Researcher of the Federal Research Center "Computer Science and Management" of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Associate Professor of the Computer Science Department of the Higher School of Economics, member of the Scientific Council of the Russian Association of Artificial Intelligence. Scientific interests: artificial intelligence; intellectual robotics; automatic planning; multi-agent   systems.


Olga Remnieva PhD in Cultural Studies, art critic, art therapist. Head of the sector of interdisciplinary programs of the directorate of the NCCA in the composition of ROSIZO, curator of special projects of the TECHNE platform, invited lecturer of the ITMO University, curator of the Laboratory of Culture of the Future. Specialist in art & science: the author of the PhD thesis: The development of nature by means of Sains-Art: natural and technological, curator of the exhibition "Science-Art - Art for Science" (Ekaterinburg, 2012) and co-curator of the exhibition Ecosystem of excesses (Polytechnic Museum, 2015 -2016), a participant of artists' studios. I lectured on scientific and technological art in a dozen cities of Russia, spoke at academic and educational events in Russia and abroad. TEDx-speaker.
