Chicken Kiev. The Walk from Garage Exhibition Pavilion to Kievsky Railway Station

Guide: Zhanna Sevostyanova

The culinary metaphor in the tour’s title is not a whim. The promenade defies chronology and switches unpredictably between diverse historical and architectural strata. What makes up a typical Chicken Kiev? The architectural recipe includes the juicy stuffing of avant-garde (Konstantin Melnikov’s Kauchuk Factory Club) wrapped in a nutritious slice of the Constructivism era’s prominent constructions (Alexander Vlasov’s Krymsky Bridge), coated by a crisp mix of traditional and temporary park architecture (former 1923 All-Union Agricultural Exhibition pavilion for mechanical engineering designed by Ivan Zholtovsky), and spiced with piquant buildings and landscapes. And, true to the traditional recipe, the entire dish is held together by the mandatory bone of Vladimir  Shukhov’s ingenious steel-work.

Tour duration: 3 hours

Meeting location: Garage temporary pavilion, Gorky Park, Krymsky Val st., 9.

Zhanna Sevostyanova has been a tour guide for Garage Center for Contemporary Culture since 2009.Trained as designer at Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry, Zhanna studies urban architecture, with a special focus on constructions built in the 1920-1930s.
