As part of The Polytechnic Museum’s program Polytech.Science.Art, bioartist and futhorologist Michał Brzeziński (Poland) will run his workshop Biosemiotics at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art.

Brzeziński’s workshop is dedicated to the biosemiotics of plants, the study contributing to research on the sign systems of living organisms. By studying the sign and nervous systems of plants, Brzeziński creates science and technology art objects in the plantpoetry genre.

Workshop participants will try to understand how man communicates with plants, what the plant sign system looks likes, and how we can interact with it using various gadgets. Is it possible to manage two-way communication with plants with the help of the experience accumulated by scientists? How can one translate the “language” of plants into plantpoetry, and which computer applications would aid in a search for words in reply to the “signals” sent by the plants?

Michał Brzeziński (Poland) is a media artist and futurologist, specializing in plant biosemiotics. An art theorist, founder of Galeria NT (Łódź) and curator of the Center of Contemporary Art Łaźnia (Gdańsk), he studied at the Media and Audiovisual Arts Center, Łódź  University. His Masters thesis “Object, Body, Identity” was dedicated to the notion of personality in today’s media world; the work combines video art and experimental filmmaking. In Poland, Brzeziński gained recognition as an expert in visual media, he was the author and host of a Polish TV program about video art, and his works were displayed at Łódź Biennale (2006), and Szczecin Festival Inspiracje (2008).

The Biosemiotics workshop will last for four days. Day one will be devoted to theory, film screenings and research-work planning, and a lecture by Brzeziński. Days two and three are scheduled for the creation, programing and testing of the participants’ own projects. The last day of the workshop is an open public event presenting the results of the workshop held at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art.

Media artists, designers, programmers, biologists and everyone who wishes to learn more about bioart with the expert contribution of research fellows from the Plant Physiology Center of the MSU Faculty of Biology are welcome to apply to participate in the workshop. The number of participants is limited. To apply, please sign up and submit your letter of motivation by 9 March, 2015. On March 10, 2015, the final list of participants will be announced.
