Garage Has Launched a New Season of the Museum for Beginners Course for Deaf and Hard of Hearing School Kids

Date

14 MARCH 2017

Museum for Beginners is a course developed by Garage’s Department of Inclusive Programs specially for Moscow schools for deaf and hard of hearing children.

In March, the course was launched at SKOSHI 52, the special boarding school for deaf children. In the first class, teachers from Garage’s Inclusive Department talked to the kids about museums, exhibits in them, and the things an artist can do.

As Garage’s tours for the deaf have shown, most deaf and hard of hearing children do not know the signs for many concepts relating to art and museums. The course Museum for Beginners was designed to fill those gaps in order to make museum visits for deaf children easier and more fun.

Working with deaf and hard of hearing visitors is one of the main priorities of Garage’s Department of Inclusive Programs. One of the most popular formats of working with the hearing impaired is tours in Russian Sign Language.

Museum for Beginners was developed by Garage’s Inclusive Programs manager, teacher and signer Vlad Kolesnikov and tailored for deaf and hard of hearing children. The course was first read at Mikaelyan SKOSHI 30, the pre-school department of the special boarding school for deaf children, and later proved a success with second- to fourth-year kids at the same school

Since the school staff have testified that the course has allowed children to familiarize themselves with many new concepts, Garage has decided to continue the program.

From March 9 to 23, 2017, the course will continue at SKOSHI 52. Six classes at the school premises will be followed by a tour of Garage. Each class combines a theoretic part with a workshop allowing for a better understanding of theory.
