Date

10 FEB 2013

The "Garage" Center for Contemporary Culture held a master-class for young graphic designers organized in collaboration with the Ad Marginem Press publishing House and with financial support of the Swiss Arts Council ProHelvetia. The master class was conducted by Lionel Bovier, Director of Swiss publishing house JRP|Ringier, and Art Director Gilles Gavillet (founder of Gavillet&Rust design bureau).

Through the contest of applications Lionel Bovier and Gilles Gavillet selected participants of the master-class - 10 young Russian graphic designers (aged 21-30) - Alexander Blucher, Anatoly Grashenko, Maxim Dereviankin, Maria Kosareva, Stepan Lipatov, Evgeny Nikolaev, Maxim Santalov, Zarema Sharifullina, Denis Sharypin, and Anastasia Yarullina.

The goal of the master class was to design a layout of one of the two books published by JRP|Ringier:
1) a book on "void exhibitions" Voids. A Retrospective
2) a monograph about artist Mai-Thu Perret

The participants were provided with the text and illustrations. During two days (November 29 and 30, 2012) they worked on their own layouts of the books, and on November 30 the judges chose the two best works. Along with Lionel Bovier and Gilles Gavillet the layouts were judged by Marina Vasiltsova, Head of the Garage Center's Marketing and Advertising Department, Olga Dubitskaya, coordinator of the Garage's Publishing Program, and Sergey Serov, President of the Golden Bee Global Biennale of Graphic Arts, Director of the Higher Academic School of Graphic Design (Moscow).

Maria Kosareva (Voids) and Stepan Lipatov (Mai-Thu Perret) became the winners of the competition. In 2013, they will be making designs of books under the Ad Marginem and "Garage" Center joint publishing program.
