DESCRIPTION

Mikhail Sapozhnikov will speak about one of the most outstanding musicians of the twentieth century, saxophonist and composer John Coltrane.

Coltrane was not only among the key figures in the history of jazz, but also greatly influenced our musical culture in general. Even today, he remains an icon for many jazz musicians around the world.

The lecture will consist of a brief overview of Coltrane’s life, and an analysis of his musical career—from his early bebop-era recordings and his performances in Miles Davis Sextet to Coltrane’s works in his own famous quartet and later ensembles. Video recordings and photographs of concerts will be shown.

Two publications on John Coltrane and Miles Davis translated by Mikhail Sapozhnikov will be available during the lecture: Lewis Porter, John Coltrane: His Life and Music (published in Russian by Art-Volkhonka, 2015), and Ashley Kahn Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece (published in Russian by Pechantye traditsii in 2010).
