The art of Ilya Kabakov belongs to the reflexive tradition stemming from the intellectual discoveries of Marcel Duchamp, the artistic strategies of Fluxus, and the great works of Russian literature. His practice—beginning with painting, objects, and installations, before returning to painting once again—is based on an interplay of words and images. Kabakov’s visual philosophy minimizes the distance between the work of art and the spectator, who becomes a participant in the artistic process. In his lecture, Vitaliy Patsukov will discuss Kabakov’s artistic career as a journey from the personal emotional space to the existential reality of the intellectual realm.
Vitaly Patsukov is a curator, art historian and Head of Interdisciplinary Programs at the National Center for Contemporary Art (NCCA). He has initiated several educational and research projects dedicated to the legacy of the avant-garde and contemporary art. He specializes in the history of relations between science, art, and the integrated forms of artistic consciousness.
