The Art of Going Commercial. Public talk: Anton Belov and Cecilia Dean

Garage Education Center

DESCRIPTION

On Thursday November 3, Garage Education Center will host a public talk with Anton Belov, director at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and Cecilia Dean, editor-in-chief of the legendary Visionaire magazine, who has recently become the curator of Cadillac House in New York. This event is part of the launch activities for the new Cadillac brand platform "Dare Greatly".

Visionaire and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art are collaborating within this new platform, which also enabled the publication of a new book Visionaire: Experiences in Art and Fashion which will be presented during this conversation.

The audience will have an opportunity to follow two professionals in discussion about strategies that allow the combination of hard-line uncompromising art and a commercial approach, as well as ways to attract well-established artists, photographers and other creatives to be part of a collaborative project. A project that illustrates this approach is Proof: Francisco Goya, Sergei Einsenstein, Robert Longo, an exhibition which opened this fall at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art with the support of Cadillac.

The Museum's book shop will present twenty-five issues of Visionaire magazine that best illustrate the magazine's twenty-five years of existence. These issues include collaborations with John Baldessari, Karl Lagerfeld, Mario Testino, David Sims, Riccardo Tisci, Louis Vuitton, Comme Des Garçons Levi’s, Tiffany, Alexander McQueen and other cult personalities and companies. Every issue is the result of six months' work and a true art piece devoted entirely to one person or subject. It transcends the traditional magazine format.

DESCRIPTION

Cecilia Dean, is best known as founder of Visionaire and V Magazines. Her career is an extraordinary example of the evolution from modeling to editing: she was one of the most prominent models in the 1980s, posing for the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Peter Lindbergh and Mario Testino. At the height of her success, she decided to go back to studying at Barnard College in New York. After graduating, she co-founded the now iconic publication Visionaire, which aims to bridge the gap between fashion and other fields of creativity. Editor of the magazine, she also co-founded the twin publications V and V Man. Visionaire has now become more than a magazine: it is an art object, collected by admirers all over the world.

Anton Belov, has been director of Garage Museum of Contemporary Art since 2010. Prior to this, he founded the non-profit Project Gallery White in Moscow, working with young artists to develop new works. In 2009, he launched the bilingual magazine and online resource ARTGUIDE, dedicated to the coverage of events in the field of contemporary art in Moscow. This is now the leading magazine of its kind. He was a member of the Public Council of the Russian Ministry of Culture from 2012 to 2013. Belov is a graduate of the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (NITU “MISA”) with a degree in Physics and Chemistry.
