DISCRIPTION

Film about one of the founders of conceptual art and minimalism who dramatically changed our understanding of art.

Sol LeWitt avoided interviews, shunned socializing, and couldn’t stand being called “a creative person.” His work raises the question of where conceptual principles end and where the quest for beauty begins. “I really believe that art is not something that's laid down as frosting on the cake of society,” he said in one of his interviews. “I think that aesthetics and ethics are really very much the same kind of thing.” Chris Teerink’s documentary (with a meditative soundtrack by Machinefabriek) offers a glimpse into Sol LeWitt’s life.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Arteholic is a program of screenings that focuses on art obsessions, prepared by Garage in collaboration with the PERFORM Festival. The program takes a look at artists in the late 20thcentury who have chosen art as a revolutionary modus operandi or who have a penchant for obsessive collecting. Two films explore the darker aspects of a passion for art: the way it can make people break the law in order to enlighten others, or the way it can become the only way of communicating with the outside world. All films will be screened in Russia for the first time.

HOW TO TAKE PART
