Curator Maria Rus Bojan and Antonio Geusa will discuss the key trends in Romanian art of the past decade and analyze the latest developments in the Romanian contemporary art scene.
Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and Triumph Gallery are proud to present the public program for EXTENSION, a series of international exhibitions exploring contemporary art scenes in different countries. The exhibition project opens with Extension.ro, exploring contemporary art in Romania. The public program will include a series of curators’ talks devoted to the key trends and figures in Romanian contemporary art, and will take place at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art.
In the last decade Romania has played host to one of the most vibrant and fast-changing art scenes in the former Eastern Bloc. Romanian artists are regularly featured in leading art magazines and international exhibitions, and are often discussed by art professionals around the world.
This phenomenon was started by, among other things, the activity of a group of painters that formed around the University of Art and Design in Romania’s second city of Cluj-Napoca, the emergence of private galleries, and the opening of Bucharest’s National Museum of Contemporary Art in the Palace of the Parliament.
Maria Rus Bojan, the curator of the Romanian pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale, will hold a discussion along with curator and art critic Antonio Geusa on the phenomenal success of artists including Victor Man, Adrian Ghenie, Serban Savu, and Ciprian Muresan, and their focus on painting, the specificity of the Romanian art market, and the cultural institutions that have opened since the start of the 21st century.
