Presentation of Documentary Film Recollections by Oleg Karavaichuk
November 21, 2013
Thursday
7:30 pm
Venue: Garage Education Center

On November 21, 7:30 pm, celebrated pianist and composer Oleg Karavaichuk will present the first part of his documentary cycle entitled Recollections at Garage Education Center. The event continues the collaboration between the maestro and Garage that started in early 2012 when Karavaichuk staged the concert My End is My Beginning: Antiphony at the newly opened Garage Temporary Pavilion in Gorky Park, designed by renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban.

The 2012 concert featured the composer's own music accompanied by classical dancing and video art. In 2013 Karavaichuk will revisit Garage to unveil his latest experiment in documentary movie-making by screening the first chapter of the 12-part autobiographical cycle.

The film Recollections, Part One transcends the conventions of the documentary genre. Karavaichuk is not offering a simplistic account of his dramatic life and creative activities; instead, he turns the autobiographical narrative into a work of art: the non-linear script, inspired direction, individual playing technique, and poetic recitations combine to produce a total video performance. The presentation audience will recognize allusions to the great works by the composers of the past and listen to Karavaichuk's improvisations.

The film presentation will take the form of a public meeting with the composer. Karavaichuk will answer visitors' questions, reveal his ideas for the next chapters in the Recollections cycle, and share further details about his eventful life and prolific career.

Oleg Karavaichuk (b. 1927) is a pianist and composer with a degree from Leningrad Conservatory. He started composing early and at the age of seven took part in a concert attended by Joseph Stalin. Since 1953 Karavaichuk has regularly worked in the movie industry and scored over 50 films.
