Artist Liza Bobkova, who graduated from and formerly taught at the Stieglitz Academy in St. Petersburg, reappraises the tools of the «great school» and boldly experiments with them, while preserving a craftsperson’s devotion to the material.
When considering what the turbulence of 2023 taught her and what is worth sharing with those attending the meeting at Garage, Liza suggested focusing on her usual practices, which are grounded in the present: the epistolary genre and washes.
A wash is a layered technique of using watercolor or India ink in gradations from patches of light to casting shadows. It is usually employed in preparatory (grisaille) sketches or to create volume in architectural drawings. This is one of the basic elements of the classical school of painting and is more often used as an auxiliary technique. For Liza, washes are an art form in themselves and a handy means of self-observation. In 2023, she kept a daily visual diary, Attempts, in which she tried to depict a black hole using a wash. This technique is labor intensive (especially for beginners) and requires perseverance and dedication.
