LOCAL HISTORIES OF ART
A series of mini conferences with speakers from the regions will offer insights into art scenes in small towns, particular areas, and regions, and tell the stories of artists who have not left for the capital, and have instead chosen to stay and work with the local culture. Artists, philosophers, curators, museum professionals, and art historians invited by the Triennial are free to choose the format of their presentation, while the choice of speakers and subjects will allow visitors to learn more about artists and works that have not been included in the exhibition.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Anton Valkovsky (b. 1986, Volgograd, Russia) — curator and researcher of contemporary art. Lives and works in Volgograd. He graduated from Volgograd State Pedagogical University in 2009 and holds a PhD in Philosophy. Since 2009 he has been a lecturer in Contemporary Art Theory and Practice and Art Management in Volgograd State Pedagogical University and has been giving public lectures on the local art scene and contemporary art in general. Since 2012 he has been a senior specialist in project and strategic planning and communications at Volgograd Oblast Agency for Cultural Initiatives. He curated public art projects (Re)Inventing the Public: Check-Points, Volgograd (2015) and (Re)Inventing the Public: Apologia of the Void, Volgograd (2016). Since 2014 he has been studying and archiving Volgograd performance and video art of 1980s and 1990s.
Leyly Aslanova (b. 1989, Krasnodar Krai, Russia) — artist and curator. Lives and works in Rostov-on-Don. She graduated in Fine Art from the Teachers Training Institute of the Southern Federal University in 2011, and the Baza Institute in Moscow in 2013. From 2011 to 2013 she curated projects at the art hub Creative Space, Rostov-on-Don. Since 2013 she has been curating exhibitions at MAKARONKA Art Center, Rostov-on-Don, and has been the curator of DON Contemporary Art Foundation since 2016.
Maria Udovydchenko (b. 1983, Saint Petersburg, Russia) — independent curator. Lives and works in Saint Petersburg and Simferopol. She graduated in Museum and Exhibition Design from Saint-Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts in 2005. From 2007 to 2012 she worked in the Department of Arts Programs at the National Centre for Contemporary Arts in Moscow. From 2008 to 2009 she attended a course at the Open Workshops School of Contemporary Art, Moscow Museum of Contemporary Art. In September 2012, she moved to Crimea and opened ArtPlatz Residence, a residency for artists in Nauchny. Since 2013, she has been the organizer and curator of BEREG experimental project for young artists (Crimea) and Museum Night at Tavrida Central Museum in Simferopol. Since 2017 she has been the curator of education and research at the Institute of Street Art, Saint Petersburg.
