Public Program: Animated Objects and Forbidden Fantasies

Date

Description

My whole life I strive at being neither the puppeteer, nor the puppet. That is, neither the manipulator, nor the manipulated.

Jan Švankmajer

The animated films of Jan Švankmajer and Nathalie Djurberg are both captivating and unsettling at the same time. Sharing a candid and poignant style of expression, they create absurd narratives that bring to mind the work of the early Surrealists.

Through this series of lectures, viewers can discover the hidden meanings behind the everyday objects bought to life in Švankmajer’s films and learn more about the way in which Djurberg uses animals to explore the darker aspects of human nature.
