Garage Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to invite GARAGE Premium cardholders and Art Lovers’ Circle members to a curator-led tour of the Bone Music exhibition.
Garage members of Premium and higher levels get an opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes of the art world. Each season, they are invited to learn about our projects directly from those who create them—Garage curators.
This Saturday, the tour is run by Stephen Coates, composer and music producer. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, he is particularly interested in the interaction between music and culture. Visitors will see Bone Music—a project devoted to a unique episode in postwar Soviet history. From the late 1940s to the early 1960s, inventive Soviet music lovers made illegal copies of banned music on used x-ray film. The installation produced for the Moscow exhibition reveals the unintentional beauty of the rare “bone music” discs and accentuates the accidental aesthetics of these artifacts of clandestine production, born out of necessity.
