DESCRIPTION

Seeking to foster dialogue in Russia on societal challenges affecting the world at large, Garage has developed a collaboration with the 15th edition of the Istanbul Biennial to present an international billboard project entitled a good neighbour.

Taking place in cities around the world, from Manchester to Sydney, Havana to Delhi, six billboard-sized photographs explore notions of home, neighborhood, and belonging. Created by biennial artist Lukas Wassmann (b. 1980, Zurich, Switzerland) the photographs capture various unexpected encounters between the artist and different cultural contexts.

Whether from the artist’s archive or created specifically for the Istanbul Biennial, the photographs are produced in a state of drift from one place to another. Acting as a contemplator and a flâneur, Wassmann journeyed through countryside and cities around the world, including Turkey, France, Switzerland, and Iceland. Every image is accompanied by a frank and thoughtful question about what makes a good neighbor.

For the Moscow iteration, the six billboards are placed around Gorky Park, home to Garage and a popular Moscow meeting place for people of all ages and walks of life.

Curated by artists Elmgreen & Dragset, the 15th Istanbul Biennial is organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) and will take place from September 16 to November 12, 2017.

The project at Garage is organized by assistant curator Iaroslav Volovod.
