This installment of Art in the Twenty-first Century dwells on such topics as the transformation of method, the refashioning of identity, and the evolution of themes and focuses. Yinka Shonibare, a British artist of Nigerian descent, initially worked with traditional African materials, but later moved to installations reflecting on the historic roles of empires and colonies, or on the significance of national dress in the relationship between individual and state. In the 1970s, photo artist Cindy Sherman launched her career with a series of staged portraits depicting herself as a range of stereotyped movie heroines. Today, she continues to transform herself, but now as well-to-do ladies represented in the manner of society portraits. Paul McCarthy’s long and prolific career charts the history of changing media and techniques: the artist has at different times engaged in grotesque performances and videos, graphics, and sculpture, consistently exposing social roles, double standards, and the craze for consumption prevalent in today’s society.
