A Garage Cooperative: A Walk from the Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage to White Square
Valery Serikov

For the Soviet man, a garage could become his second home: a bastion of freedom and male independence. Only recently, when a garage – more precisely the Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage designed by Konstantin Melnikov – became home to Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, a site that stimulated the development of contemporary culture in Russia, did this change. This tour is inspired by the constructivist impulse of creating a ‘home for transport’, it visits a number of buildings designed by Melnikov, such as the Palace of Culture, in addition to the office of the Pravda newspaper; created by Golosov Panteleimon and numerous other avant garde buildings. The tour also features several well-known, but rarely visited historic and picturesque sites of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The tour will last approximately 3 hours.

Meeting point: the Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage, the facade facing onto Obraztsova Street 11, Building 1A.
