Garage Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the recipients of its program in support of emerging Russian artists for 2015-2016

From 435 applications received in summer 2015, five new winners have been selected to receive this year's scholarship: 

  • Anastasia Marakulina (St. Petersburg)
  • Julia Zastava (Moscow)
  • Nikolai Saprykin (Moscow)
  • Anna Titova (Moscow)
  • Ivan Novikov (Moscow)

Nikolai Alekseev and Evgeny Granilshchikov have been awarded the grant for the second year in a row.

Launched in 2012, the program is currently the only initiative of its kind in Russia. The recipients represent a range of genres in contemporary art, including video, photography, sculpture, painting, and street art. The principal selection criteria included originality, use of novel forms and materials, and credibility of artistic solutions.

Next year's open call for applications will start from summer 2016.

The application process is based on an open call, after which an expert committee determines the final winners, who each receive monthly payments of 30,000 rubles throughout the year. The grant program is designed to help artists ages 18 to 35 gain financial independence and focus on developing both their professional skills and the scope of their research. Grant holders are also encouraged to participate in Garage's various educational programs and exhibitions.

In 2012, seven artists were selected from a total of 405 applicants. Scholarships were awarded to Ivan Gorshkov, Yulia Zastava, Kirill Lebedev, Kirill Makarov, Margarita Ovcharenko, Igor Ponosov, and Maria Kharitonova. In 2013, 307 applicants were assessed, the winners being Marina Androsovich, Ivan Gorshkov, Evgeny Granishchikov, Ilya Dolgov, Arseny Zhilyaev, Ksenia Sorokina, and the group ZIP. Held in 2014 as part of Garage Project Space, an exhibition titled 11 featured works by the eleven previous awardees. The show was curated by artist Evgeny Antufiev, the head of Garage Grant Program.
